Creation & creative-use guide

BLOOMIN’FONT is a free browser tool for turning your handwriting into an original font. No account is currently required to create, save or export your work.

How to turn your handwriting into a font

  1. Choose to make your own font, then select a creation method, language and characters.
  2. Draw on screen, or print the template, write your letters and import a photo of the sheet.
  3. Preview your words, adjust size, position and spacing, then download your font.

Use brush and broad-nib tools, adjust individual letters, set kerning, ligatures and alternate glyphs, and export TTF, OTF or WOFF. Ligatures and alternates depend on the receiving app’s OpenType support and settings.

Save and resume your work

Work is saved automatically in this browser and remains after font export. Download a project file to keep a backup or continue on another device. Browser data can be lost if it is cleared. A font file and an editable project file serve different purposes.

Made with AI. Finished by You.

Pair an AI-created background or layout with a headline or message in your own handwriting. Export transparent PNG lettering and overlay it in an image editor. AI image generation and image compositing are separate steps outside this tool.

Make a font from paper handwriting or calligraphy

  1. Select the paper method and print a template for the characters you need.
  2. Write each character in its matching cell. Keep fine strokes and dots inside the cell.
  3. Photograph the whole sheet, including its corner marks, in even light without strong shadows or glare.
  4. Import the photo, mark the corners and extract the letters. Adjust darkness and shadow correction and review the selected characters.
  5. Check thin strokes and small marks, adjust individual cells where needed, and import the result.

You can also use the on-screen brush and broad-nib tools. Try different tip settings and angles, and check that fine strokes survive in the exported font.

Refine Japanese lettering and calligraphy

Preview a short sentence to balance size, vertical position and spacing. Use ligatures for connected letter sequences and alternate glyphs for variations. The receiving application may need its ligature or contextual-alternate options enabled.

Add your handwriting to AI-generated art

This example workflow makes a poster with an AI-created background and a handwritten headline. It is an illustrative workflow, not a customer case study.

  1. Create a background without text in an image-generation tool, leaving space for a headline.
  2. In BLOOMIN’FONT, write the letters needed for a short headline such as “Summer memories”.
  3. Use the text-image screen to choose your words and color, then download a transparent PNG.
  4. Place the PNG over your background in an image editor. Check contrast and thin strokes at the final display size.

The same approach works for social images and presentation graphics. To type more text later, import a TTF or OTF into an application that accepts custom fonts. Check that application’s supported formats and plan requirements.

Keep both the font and the editable project

TTF and OTF are fonts for supported applications; WOFF is a web-font format. A project file keeps your editable handwriting and settings. Use Open project data to continue editing. This is different from importing an existing TTF for editing, which this tool does not offer.

Use Font Book on Mac or the font installation option on Windows. On iPhone, iPad or Android, open the font in an app that supports importing custom fonts. Downloading a font does not automatically change your device’s system typeface.

If an in-app browser restricts saving, try exporting your project file, then open it in Safari or Chrome. Work does not automatically transfer between browsers.

How to choose a font maker

Check character coverage, drawing versus paper import, export formats, storage and account requirements. Compare free-tier limits and ligature support against your own project. BLOOMIN’FONT lets you keep your own editable project files.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

The current public version is free to use. Contributions are optional. Any future changes to pricing or availability will be announced.

Can I use a phone?

You can draw, import and export in a browser. Font installation depends on your device and receiving app. Transparent PNG lettering does not require font installation.

Are my drawings uploaded?

Normal creation processes handwriting, imported images and typed text in your browser without uploading them. Keep your own project files. Information you deliberately submit through a contact form is handled separately.

Can I make Japanese lettering?

Select the kana and kanji you need and create those characters. Keep an editable project file as well as the TTF or other font file you use in supported apps.
